Towards the sea, the city stands on a promontory shaped like a bent elbow, which protects the largest natural harbor in the central Adriatic. The places and the most representative monuments of Ancona are placed in a natural environment dominated by hilly promontory on which stands the city: the Cathedral to its own summit, the Arch of Trajan and the Lazaretto on the docks, the old lighthouse and the Citadel on top of the hills overlooking the sea and the War Memorial in the place where the valley opens into the city's central coast high.
